Abstract
Objectives: Iontophoresis is the induction of ionized medications topically via low level electric current. This study evaluated the effectiveness of herb-iontophoresis for the pain management of musculoskeletal disease.

Methods: Patients were divided into iontophoresis and control group. Iontophoresis group was administered ionized herb medicine via iontophoresis and was performed acupuncture treatment, oral herb medication and others. Control group was performed acupuncture treatment, oral herb medication and others. Pain levels were recorded initially and finally utilizing a visual analog pain scale(VAS) of 0-10. Then we analyzed the improvement score{(initial VAS-final VAS)/initial VAS¡¿100(%)} according to ages, chief complaint between iontophoresis and control group.

Results: There were a total of 74 patients enrolled in the study, 26 in the iontophoresis group and 48 in the control group. The iontophoresis group had better results than control group in improvement score(49.4¡¾31.8% versus 42.1¡¾32.8%). The improvement scores of forties, shoulder and flank pain were statistically significant(p<0.05) as compared with control group.

Conclusion: The results from this study have demonstrated herb-iontophoresis to show clinically improvement in the pain management of musculoskeletal disease.
